If you’re considering a ductless mini split air conditioner (and if you own an older home in Toronto, ductless is the best way to keep your house cool), everything you need to know is right here on this page.
These are our most common questions, with answers from members of our team.
How does ductless air conditioning work?
Ductless air conditioners use 2 units connected by a small copper tube and some electrical work to keep your family cool.
- The outdoor unit produces cool air.
- The inside unit spreads it around the room, or multiple rooms.
You have the same sort of control over temperature as with a central air unit, but you don’t need the bulky ductwork.
Multiple indoor units can give different rooms more precise environmental control. So your bedroom can be cooler than the bedroom the cat has claimed.
Is it quick to install?
Yes, as long as a professional does it.
A ductless system is more straightforward to install than a full sized central unit, but we don’t recommend homeowners ever try it themselves.
The manufacturer probably won’t recognize your suitability to install and if you ever file a warranty claim it’s likely to be rejected.
Your installer will run the coolant, drainage and electricity lines between the indoor and outdoor units after drilling a small hole from the exterior to the interior of your house. They will calibrate the gauges precisely.
How big or small should my ductless system be?
How big is the area you want to cool?
A 9,000 BTU unit will cool about a 400 sq. ft. area. The cooling area roughly doubles with every additional 9,000 BTUs. We recommend choosing a unit that will cool one or two rooms. Any more and you lose the precise control ductless systems are best known for.
So while some units can cool up to 2,500 sq. ft., they might not be the best choice for your home.
Will my bills skyrocket?
Generally the efficiency you get from a ductless air conditioning system is greater than other methods of cooling. A traditional central air conditioner loses cool air in the ductwork and cools rooms you aren’t trying to cool down.
Ductless air conditioners are localized so, like a tankless water heater, you only cool the space you use. No waste.
With a good quality ductless air conditioner you have the most efficient cooling on the market.
Why not just get a window unit?
Because windows are for light and breezes and looking out, not bulky air conditioners.
- Is more efficient.
- Provides better temperature control.
- Operates more silently.
- Lasts longer.
- Takes up less space, among other things.
We have nothing against window units, but ductless mini split air conditioners are far superior.
